Coach Adds 3
Today Volleyball Head Coach Kim McKay annouced three newcomers who have signed national letters of intent to play Volleyball for the Leathernecks next season.
The Fighting Leathernecks received letters from Heather Smith, a setter from LaSalle, Ill., Meghan Ross, a defensive specialist/outside hitter from Plainfield Ill., and Alaina DiGiorgio-Verdin, a middle hitter from Lannon, Wis.
“I focused on intangible characteristics when looking for players in this class,” McKay said. “I wanted players who had court presence, leadership, competitive toughness and energy. Each player has a high level of initiative and accountability on and off the court.
Heather Smith will be joining the team after four years at LaSalle-Peru High School, where her team won the IHSA Class 3A Region. Smith will join the team most likely as a setter, and will learn from Junior Ellen Miller, before taking over the job.
Meghan Ross, from Plainfield, Illinois, will be coming to the Leathernecks by way of Nicole Anderson, a former player un Coach McKay. Meghan will be able to play at multiple positions, and at 5'8'' she will be able to play as a defensive specialist (possibly libero) or even a left/right side hitter on offense. “Meghan caught my attention because of her court presence, which is hard to miss because of her intensity and competitiveness,” McKay said. “I primarily recruited her to fill a defensive role, but she has the skill and jumping ability to be a left or right side hitter if we need her to.”
Lastly, joining the team for the 2010 season will be Alaina DiGiorgio-Verdin, a 6' middle hitter from Lannon, Wisconsin. A natural athlete, Alaina will be looked at for a spark on offense and a great all-around player. Ms. Digiorgio-Verdin is the first recruit for assistant coach Melissa David, who coached Alaina at the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club
