Introduction

February 17, 2021

Greetings! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Western Illinois University!

At Western, our purpose is to unlock our students’ potential. We provide student-centered programs characterized by innovative teaching, research, and service. Our general education, major, and graduate programs are grounded in multidisciplinary, regional, and global perspectives. We create diverse, dynamic learning environments where we engage our students in educational opportunities both on our campuses and in collaboration with alumni and community partners throughout our region.

At the core of our day-to-day life at Western are four values:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Educational Opportunity
  • Personal Growth
  • Social Responsibility

Grounded in these values, the Western community prepares our students for success.

  • Our students see high value in having full-time, tenure-track, and tenured faculty members actively teaching and mentoring in the classroom, in the availability of student-centered advising, in the abundance of student success resources, in a new multi-building campus in Moline and in a developing campus in Macomb (which includes a new multicultural center), in a growing international student community, and in a robust set of extra- and co-curricular programs.
  • Our faculty members are leaders, mentors, and brilliant teachers in the classroom. They make a transformative difference in the lives of our students, many of whom are first-generation and arrive here with enormous potential, though they may have lacked a reliable roadmap for academic accomplishment.
  • Our 42,292 alumni are at the heart of our Leatherneck family. Our alumni consistently express a sincere devotion to Western—and indeed, they are often community leaders, embodying the values of our institution in their daily practices and activities in our local schools, businesses, and governments.

Western Illinois University is a mid-size public university located in Macomb, Illinois, with a branch campus in Moline, IL. Founded by the state of Illinois in 1898 as a normal school designed to increase the number of teachers in the region, the institution has enjoyed continuous accreditation with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Higher Learning Commission since 1913. Each September we celebrate Founders’ Day to honor the beginnings of the University—Western first opened its doors for student enrollment on September 23, 1902.

Western's purple and gold school colors root us in the region and reflect pride in our heritage. In the opening year of the Western Illinois Normal School (1902-03), first-year student Mary Jarvis, inspired by the surrounding "vast golden prairie strewn with purple coneflowers," suggested the combination for a schoolwide contest. The purple and gold ribbons she displayed for the contest are on her framed 1906 diploma, which can be seen in the University Archives.

Today, Western offers a wide-range of academic degree programming through four academic colleges, the Centennial Honors College, and the Leslie F. Malpass Library. These programs include 65 baccalaureate degrees, 33 master’s degrees, 2 educational specialist degrees, and 2 doctorate degrees (one research and one professional practice). On both of our campuses, and in our online programming, we have dedicated professionals advising and supporting our students with a whole range of services—from tutoring and success workshops to various kinds of co-curricular residence hall programming.

In athletics, Western’s football program competes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) through the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). All other Leatherneck sports compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of The Summit League.

We are very proud of our students’ success, our faculty’s scholarly expertise and achievements, and the support our alumni and the broader Western community provide to our University. As part of the Higher Learning Commission’s comprehensive evaluation, we believe Western’s assurance argument and supporting evidence tell this story very well.

Sincerely,

Guiyou Huang, PhD
President
