Marketing involves developing products and services to satisfy customers' needs and then making them available at the right places, at the right times, and at competitive prices. The WIU Marketing degree offers students a broad-based education in a variety of marketing specialties including integrated marketing communications, retail management, and sales management.
Changes in social and economic systems have created new challenges for marketing professionals in both domestic and global opportunities. Students who major in Marketing at WIU are qualified to assume a variety of careers including personal selling, advertising management, marketing research, retailing management, and public relations.
Why Marketing at WIU?
WIU Marketing professors have been the recipients of university and national teaching awards from the American Marketing Association, the Marketing Management Association, the Society for Marketing Advances, and WIU. All WIU Marketing professors bring real-world experience and/or current consulting experience into the classroom. WIU Marketing professors publish in the highest quality journals in the field, including the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of Advertising Research, and many others.
One of the elements that differentiates the Marketing major at WIU is the use of computer-based simulations throughout the undergraduate curriculum. We believe that the best way to prepare you to make marketing decisions is to have you start making marketing decisions from your very first class (MKTG 327 - Marketing Principles). At WIU, you won't just study marketing – you'll put it into practice from your very first course in the major.
Small Class Sizes
The largest class size within the department is the Marketing Principles class, which is capped at 40 students. Most other classes have limits of 25-35 students. All MKTG classes are taught by faculty (no teaching assistants) with over 75% of all classes taught by professors with a doctorate in the field. At WIU, classes are small enough that our Marketing professors know our students by name in nearly all classes.
