Undergraduate Majors, Minors & Programs of Study
Microbiology or the study of microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc.) and is an option of study in the Bachelor of Science in Biology. A majority of courses in the department have a laboratory component in addition to classroom lecture. Class sizes are small; usually held to 14 students, allowing each student to view material presented, ask questions, and handle the study organisms directly.
Microbiology prepares students for a broad spectrum of job opportunities, including teaching, pharmaceuticals, quality control and research. Many students majoring in Microbiology pursue graduate degrees through the Master of Science in Biology available at WIU, or at medical or professional schools.
Students planning to major in Microbiology should complete three years of mathematics and one year each of biology, physics, and chemistry in high school.
