Respondus Chromebook Beta

At the end of December 2020, Respondus released their Chromebook beta for Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor. CITR has done minor testing and we have been able to determine it is functional and working.

We are reaching out to faculty to ask that they have their Chromebook users at minimum take a practice exam using the new Respondus Chromebook beta. Upon the success of the practice exam, we encourage faculty to go ahead and use the Respondus Chromebook option on a quiz and/or exam for these students. During the beta period, instructors will need to allow the use of LockDown Browser for Chromebook on a per exam basis.

Known Limitations to the Beta

The following features are not currently available or supported. If you need any of these features you will need to continue to use Honorlock at this time

  • Quiz passwords (specified via the "optional password" field in the LockDown Browser Dashboard)
  • Early Exit Feature
  • LockDown Browser’s Calculator and Spreadsheet
  • Extended Keyboard Functions (for adding symbols and special characters)
  • LockDown Browser’s Help Center in the active browser window
  • Allow Access to Specific External Web Domains option

  2. Click on the LockDown Browser link.
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow to the left of the quiz that you want to edit, then choose Settings.
  4. Ensure that Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam is chosen.

What Chromebook Users/Students Need to Know

  • Students using a Chromebook will need to use the regular LockDown Browser Installation Link for WIU. They will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.
  • The LockDown Browser installation link will direct the student to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select Add to Chrome to install the LockDown Browser Extension. If the instructor allows an exam to use the Chromebook version of LockDown Browser, it will automatically launch LockDown Browser at the appropriate time.
  • Pop-ups need to be enabled in Chrome for the server otherwise the student gets stuck on the Start Quiz page. If pop-ups are not allowed there will be a point in which it looks like they cannot move forward and are hung up on start. This means that they need to allow pop-up blockers. Once they do this they will be able to continue.

View Respondus Instructions for students to allow pop-up blockers OR follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Pop ups and redirects.
  2. Move the toggle switch to the right to allow pop ups.
  3. Alternatively, you can click the add button under the Allow header, and add your D2L Brightspace URL ( to the list of sites.

After you have read and understood the limitations and what your Chromebook Users will need to know, please sign up to participate in the Chromebook Beta . CITR will contact you and ask for feedback on the experience after you have completed your practice exams/quizzes with your students.
