WIU LIBRARIES PROVIDE ONLINE ACCESS:
ATLA RELIGION DATABASE

The University Libraries are now providing access to the online version of the American Theological Library Association's ATLA Religion Database. Previously available only in CD-ROM format within Malpass Library, this database is now accessible to all WIU students, faculty and staff via the Internet. Off-campus users, once prompted, should enter their 14-digit Library Identification Number (21771 plus your 9-digit WIU ID Number).

The ATLA Religion Database is an essential tool for the study of religion. It is the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion.

The more than 1.1 million records in the ATLA Religion Database include:
  • 372,000 journal articles
  • 200,000 essays from 15,500 multi-author works
  • 364,000 book reviews
  • 1,523 journal titles; 600 of which are currently indexed
  • 36 languages
  • 128,000 cross-referenced subject headings
  • Journals are selected for inclusion according to their scholarly merit and scope. Journals representing all the major religious faiths, major denominations, and numerous language groups are included. Coverage areas include: Human Culture & Society, Religion & Social Issues; Antiquities/Archaeology, Bible, Church History, Ecumenism, Ethics, Missions, Pastoral Ministry, Philosophy, Religions/Religious Studies, and Theology.

ATLA's indexing of multi-author works, such as Festschriften and conference proceedings, is unique among religion databases. Unlike indexes that catalog books of essays as a single entry, individual essays are indexed in each such work.
