The Human Diversity Exhibit
"All of us are related, Each of us is unique"
This fall the Leslie F. Malpass Library will feature an exhibit,
All of us are related, Each of us is unique which portrays the
complexity of human diversity. Eighteen panels, displayed on the 5th and 6th levels
of the Malpass Library, constitute an abridged version of an exposition
originally presented at the Musée l'Homme in Paris, and were produced
by the Laboratory of Biological Anthropology of the University of Geneva
in Switzerland. The version displayed in the Malpass Library was produced
under the leadership of Dr. Marshall Segall of Syracuse University (online exhibit).
The series of panels illustrate how humans are at the same time biologically alike but
unique. For example, each individual is genetically different from other people, but
another person, chosen at random would also share most of the same genetic materials.
The Human Diversity Exhibit was brought to the WIU campus through the efforts
of Psychology Professor Bem Allen with support from the University Libraries,
the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Education and Interdisciplinary
Studies, and the Provost's Office.
A reception highlighted by self-guided tours of the exhibit and a videotaped
presentation will be held in the Garden Lounge of the Malpass Library on
October 7, 2002 from 4-6 p.m. The public is invited.
