When off-campus...

ACCESS DATABASES WITH ONLY
YOUR LIBRARY ID NUMBER

(i.e. 21711 plus nine-digit campus ID number)
REMEMBER TO UPGRADE YOUR BROWSER

Due to licensing agreements with commercial vendors, many of the library's online subscription databases are restricted to WIU-affiliated computer users located at the Macomb or Regional Center (Moline) campuses. In the past, some of these database vendors have supplied passwords that our off-campus patrons could use to access selected resources.

The University Library has installed a new authentication system so that you no longer have to request or keep up with these passwords. Off-campus users may now simply use their Library Identification Number to access over 40 major bibliographic databases (many providing full-text articles).

When connecting to one of these databases, simply enter your 14-digit Library Identification Number when prompted for it. As always, on-campus users (Macomb and Regional Center) connected to the WIU computing network are automatically given direct access to all library databases and never need to enter an identification number.

The 14-digit Library ID number is composed of the library's five-digit prefix code (21711), plus the nine-digit University ID number that you were assigned upon enrolling for classes (or for WIU faculty and staff, when you began employment). Your University ID number is found on your WIU ID card.

Faculty accessing FirstSearch 2 databases will continue to use their assigned password. The library continues to pursue authentication options that will make all of its databases accessble to our WIU-affiliated users at remote locations (see current remote access options for all databases).

Please contact Library Access Services if you are currently enrolled at WIU, but your Library ID does not work properly.

Technical Note: Macintosh and Windows users should upgrade their browsers to at least Internet Explorer 5.0+ (Mac | Win) or Netscape 4.7+. Some earlier versions (e.g., IE 4.1 and 4.5 for the Mac) do not provide access. Javascript and cookies should be turned "on."
