Four Fraternities and Sororities Chosen for Organizational Expansion at WIU

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – The Western Illinois University United Greek Council (UGC) announced plans in February to expand the number of member organizations on campus.

After a presentation stem and a vote by an expansion committee, four national fraternities and sororities have been approved, and all four have previously had a campus presence.

The four organizations approved to return to the WIU campus include:

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. - The Eta Eta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was chartered on March 15, 1970, on the WIU campus. For decades, it was committed to academic excellence, dedication to public service and breaking racial barriers to bring about change. The sorority has had a long-standing history of national programs and platforms that has transcended into the Macomb community, such as Breakfast with Santa, Delta Literacy initiatives and programs that focused on positive mental and physical health. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded by 22 collegiate students on Jan. 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University. With this reactivation, it will remain a powerful voice and continue to set a standard for community involvement, social action, and empowerment on the campus of WIU and in the Macomb community.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. - The Zeta Mu chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. was chartered on Oct. 30, 1971, by 10 young men on the WIU campus. Throughout the chapter's history, it has trained hundreds of young men for leadership during and after their collegiate days. Through its worldwide prominence, Kappa Alpha Psi® has had a global impact on events that affect our local communities, as well as places around the globe. Local chapters participate in community outreach activities to feed the homeless, provide scholarships to young people matriculating to college, serve as mentors to young men, participate in blood drives and serve as hosts of seminars for public health awareness to name a few.


Returning in Fall 2022

Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Inc.
- The Delta Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., WIU's first Latina-based sorority, chartered on Feb. 17, 1992, and will be returning to campus in the Fall of 2022. Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. is devoted to serving the community, while fostering a sense of pride and respect in their heritage. The sorority was founded on Sept. 29, 1990, by 13 inspiring young women from four different schools in the state of New York. This diverse group of women came together with the goal of creating an organization that would help their communities, unite women and promote scholarship.


Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
- The Iota Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on the WIU campus on May 5, 1978. From its inception on Jan. 9, 1914, the founders conceived Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community, rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders, with more than 800 chapters chartered across the United States and Canada, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Europe.
