Employee Memorial Tree Planting Set for Sept. 20
September 6, 2022
MACOMB, IL -- The annual Western Illinois University Employee Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony, which has been held each spring to honor employees who passed away, will be moved to the fall semester this year. The event will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. As the pandemic prevented the memorial planting ceremonies, employees who passed away in 2020 and 2021 will be honored at the Fall 2022 ceremony with the planting of two trees.
Employees who will be honored include:
2020
Coy Abernathy, Building Operations Engineer, Facilities Management
David DeBoeuf, Professor, Finance
Krystal Scott, Police Officer, Office of Public Safety
2021
Patricia Anderson, Associate Professor, Anthropology
Gregory "Mitch" Carey, Building Services Foreman, Facilities Management
Christie Eyler, Administrative Assistant, University Relations
Scott Hansen, Associate Professor, Management and Marketing
The Memorial Tree Grove, located on the southeast section of campus by University Village, near the West Pierce Street entrance, was established in Fall 2003, following a recommendation by members of Western's American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 417, with support from the Civil Service Employees Council, the Council of Administrative Personnel, Faculty Senate and University administration.
The annual ceremony includes one tree planted in memory of all employees who passed away during the preceding year. Honorees are employees who die while either actively working, on disability, on workers compensation or on an approved leave from the University. To date, Western has honored 53 individuals.
