In Support of Virginia Tech

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear orange and maroon tomorrow (Friday, April 20) as a show a support for Virginia Tech students and faculty. The University's website (www.wiu.edu) will also sport orange and maroon April 20 in recognition of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech family members from across the country have united to declare Friday, April 20 an "Orange and Maroon Effect" Day to honor the victims of Monday's shootings on the Virginia Tech campus. "Orange and Maroon Effect" was established several years ago for VA Tech fans to wear the school's colors to athletic events.

In addition to participating in "Orange and Maroon Effect Day," the WIU-Macomb community is asked to join together at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sherman Hall flagpole for a bell-ringing ceremony in memory of those at Virginia Tech who lost their lives. WIU-Quad Cities faculty, staff and students are asked to gather at
11 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the 60th Street Campus building for a moment of reflection.

Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine has declared April 20 a "Day of Mourning" in Virginia, highlighted by a bell- ringing ceremony at noon (eastern time). Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has declared that all Illinois public institutions will join in this solemn observance at
11 a.m. CST, in accordance with the Virginia governor's declaration.

Individuals are also encouraged to sign a memorial book, which will be available in the University Union Concourse from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, April 23.

"Western Illinois University's administration, faculty, staff and students send their sympathies and heartfelt thoughts to the Virginia Tech community," said Goldfarb.
