MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's Horn Field Campus has received a $500 grant from the Lake Education Assistance Program (LEAP), a division of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to raise community awareness regarding the protection of water resources.

According to Traci Heffelbower, a graduate recreation, park and tourism administration student from South Branch, MI, who is serving as a graduate assistant at Horn Field Campus, the project -- "Horn Field Campus Lake and Lake Watershed Environmental Eduation and Community Outreach Program" -- has been designed to raise awareness of Argyle Lake and the health of the county's water resources.

"Through this grant funding, we'll create programs to educate students about their impact of nonpoint source polution on the Lamoine River watershed," Heffelbower added. "It's my goal to show how our actions have direct implications on the Lamoine watershed, Argyle Lake and our water resources."

Pat Sullivan, a local environmental educator, has created a watershed model and will use the model to present, along with Heffelbower, to numerous classrooms in the McDonough County area as part of the program.
