'Take Back The Campus' Thursday, April 3
March 20, 2008
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will "Take Back the Campus" from 2-11 p.m. Thursday, April 3 on Vince Grady Field, with a free concert and resource fair that promotes violence prevention and awareness.
The event, held in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, is part of Women's History Month programming at WIU. Featured artists scheduled to perform include Mandi Perkins, Stellar Road, Five Times August, "Chicago's most wanted DJ" Shawn Edwards and more bands to be announced.
"The event is designed to raise awareness and to educate about how to stop the attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate a violent culture," said Scott Kohen from Buffalo Grove (IL), a graduate student in Western's College Student Personnel (CSP) program and director of the event. "Another goal is to raise money for local charities and for the Women's Center to continue its efforts in creating a campus free of violence."
The resource fair will provide information tables pertaining to violence prevention and survivor support services, "The Clothesline Project" display, a "Pledge a Hand Against Violence" activity, and guest speakers. CSP faculty member Tracy Davis and speaker Todd Denny, author of the critically acclaimed new book "Unexpected Allies: Men Who Stop Rape," will speak [time TBA].
"Without the support of Western Illinois University, the Women's Center, the Office of the Vice President for Student Services, University Housing and Dining Services, Office of Student Activities, Campus Recreation, the USA Today Readership Program, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and the many other organizations and communities that have been involved, Take Back the Campus would not be possible," Kohen said.
"We invite students, all members of our campus and community members to join us in an effort to end violence, stand for the good of each other, and most importantly stand for change," Kohen said.
To host a table at the resource fair or to contribute to the event, contact Kohen at SM-Kohen@wiu.edu, or the Women's Center at womenscenter@wiu.edu or 309/298-2242.
