August 13, 2008
MACOMB, IL - - They're coming baaack! Get ready Macomb; Western Illinois University residence halls move-in for returning students is Friday, Aug. 22; move-in for new students is Saturday, Aug. 23; and fall semester classes begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25.
Off-campus dwellers have begun their descent into Macomb, but the approximately 5,000 students who will live on-campus move in on those two extra busy days (Aug. 22-23). Once the move-in has settled down, Western projects nearly 10,800 students in Macomb and some 12,980 students overall. Enrollment totals are official after the 10th day of the new semester.
Returning students may move into residence halls beginning at 8 a.m. Friday (Aug. 22). New student move-in begins at 8 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 23). As in years past, WIU President Al Goldfarb and other Western Illinois administrators will be on hand to assist with move-in. Detailed information, including suggested times to arrive, what to bring and what not to bring to campus, is available at www.student.services.wiu.edu/uhds/prospective/movingtocampus.asp.
First-year students and their families are encouraged to attend the New Student Convocation scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 23) in Western Hall. The Convocation, which will include brief remarks by President Goldfarb, is a vital link in the transition to university life and serves to underscore the academic expectations and challenges each new student will encounter at Western Illinois University, according to Associate Provost for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies Judi Dallinger. Following the Convocation, new students and families are invited to the Family Picnic on the campus mall southwest of the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center and the 8 p.m. First Night Fun event at Vince Grady Field.
A wide variety of orientation activities to acquaint new students with the campus, offices, services and recreational opportunities are planned each day from Saturday, Aug. 23 to Friday, Sept. 12. A link to the orientation schedule, along with information and links to frequently requested information, is on the Back to School website at wiu.edu/back2school.
September will be a busy month at Western with two popular events: Moms' Weekend, Sept. 5-7, (www.student.services.wiu.edu/sac/momsweekend); and Family Weekend, Sept. 19-21 (uub.wiu.edu/familyweekend). Homecoming, with the theme "Rocky Loves the 90s," is scheduled for Oct. 11-18 (wiu.edu/alumni/events/homecoming).
