Pedestrian/Cyclist Safety Reminder
August 26, 2008
MACOMB -- Remember those words from your childhood: "Look both ways before you cross the street?" Some words of wisdom never go out of style no matter our age.
Western Illinois University's Office of Public Safety (OPS) officials reminds motorists tooling about to be mindful of the throng of pedestrians and cyclists around campus, and at the same time, reminds those walkers and peddlers to pay attention to vehicular traffic as well.
The posted speed limit on Western Avenue from Adams Street to University Drive is 20 mph between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The speed limit in parking lots is 10 mph. All other streets are 30 mph unless otherwise posted.
Pedestrians are asked to use marked crosswalks around campus to further ensure their safety as they cross the busy campus streets. Cyclists should obey the rules of the road, and are asked not to ride on campus sidewalks. Motorist should also use caution when passing Go West busses as riders may cross in front of the bus to cross the street.
