Selah Saterstrom is Case Visiting Writer at WIU October 31-November 4

MACOMB, IL - - Poet, author and teacher Selah Saterstrom, whose work has appeared in a variety of independent and experimental publications, will serve as the Fred Edwin Case and Lola Austin Case Visiting Writer in the Western Illinois University department of English and journalism Monday, Oct. 31 through Friday, Nov. 4.
Saterstrom will meet with fiction and poetry classes and be available for individual conferences with students during her time at Western. A 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 lecture on atrocity, followed by a question and answer session on the craft of writing, will be held in Simpkins Hall 014. She will give a reading of her work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 in the University Art Gallery. Both the lecture and reading are open free to the public.
A Southerner, Saterstrom is developing new forms of fiction and experimented in work which crosses several genres. Her debut novel, The Pink Institution (Coffee House Press, 2004) is billed as hybrid prose and poetry for its innovative use of text, image, photography and collage.
Saterstrom currently is an artist in residence at Warren Wilson College (Asheville, NC), where she had been a text and image instructor. She was in residence at the MacDowell Colony (Peterborough, NH), the oldest artists colony in the U.S., early in the year; and she has taught creative writing at Mars Hill (NC) College.
She is the editor of Soul Collections, an anthology of prose and poetry written by at-risk teenagers in North Carolina; and her fiction has appeared in 3rd Bed, Tarpaulin Sky and Monkey Puzzle. Saterstroms website is www.selahsaterstrom.com.
Saterstrom earned her bachelors degree in religious studies and creative writing from Millsaps College (Jackson, MS), a masters of fine arts degree from Goddard College (Plainfield, VT) and a master of theology and literature from the University of Glasgow, UK.
Westerns Fred E. and Lola Austin Case Endowment provides learning for a lifetime through extended residencies for visiting writers and greater opportunities for more interaction between students and established writers.
