- Speaker: Olympic Star Katelyn Ohashi
- Time: 7:00 PM
- Location: University Union Grand Ballroom
- Description: Western Illinois University's Counseling Center (UCC) will host Katelyn Ohashi to speak on her life as a gymnast, poet, activist and creative. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 in the University Union Grand Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
Ohashi is a star gymnast who won her first senior elite competition at age 15. She suffered a severe back injury that sidelined her; however, she was able to return to gymnastics in a balanced and healthy way under the guidance of legendary coach Valorie Kondos at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
With a focus on gender studies and exploring a range of art mediums, including photography and poetry, Ohashi found the confidence to share her story and struggles through writing and performing her poetry at open mics around L.A.
While accepting her award for Best Play on the ESPY stage, Ohashi delivered a rousing, original spoken word – calling out body shamers, sexual assault and cyberbullying. She also spoke at the 2022 UCLA Spring Commencement, becoming the youngest commencement speaker in UCLA history. She is currently an active Women's Sports Foundation member and serves as creative director for Sequel tampons, created by two female Stanford grads.
Smart, driven, fun, likable and inspiring, Ohashi is a creative force and original voice primed to help inspire all people to embrace challenges, love themselves, find their voice and live an authentic, joyful and purpose-driven life.
"Counselors from the University Counseling Center will be present to provide information about our services and support students in attendance if needed. We look forward to an opportunity to promote mental wellness and encourage all students to attend," said Cara Cerullo, director of the University Counseling Center
