About the exhibit

Western Illinois University Art Gallery is hosting "Perceptions: Exploring Sense of Self and Place through Art" from August 20 through October 19, 2013. As part of this exhibition, award-winning fiction writer Chad Simpson will visit WIU for several events.

How do we become a part of a place, and how does it become a part of us? This exhibition explores how our expectations and experiences inform our perception of our environment or community, and what factors can change that perception over time. The featured works, including interiors, images of the Midwest, neighborhoods, and urban scenes address, in some way, how and why creating a personal, cultural, or community space is important to our personal growth, well being, and success.

Commentary written by WIU faculty, who have been invited to interpret an image and connect it to their discipline, enhances our understanding of these issues. Organized with the "University 100: Personal Growth and Well-Being in Higher Education" course in mind, and with assistance from Dr. Amy Patrick Mossman, associate professor and interim director of Liberal Arts and Sciences, this exhibition should also appeal to anyone who thinks about their place in the world.
