Duke Pearson (1932-1980) was a pianist, composer, and arranger who played a key role in shaping the hard bop style of the 1950s and '60s. Pearson performed and recorded with Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Pepper Adams, and many others, as well as leading his own groups for many recordings on the Blue Note record label in the '60s. Pearson also acted as an A&R man for Blue Note, and is best known for his many compositions, including "Jeannine" and "Cristo Redentor". The Hopper Jazztet features some of Pearson's most famous compositions, including "Jeannine", and some of his more obscure works, such as "E.S.P.", in hopes of shedding some light on the style of this great yet lesser known jazz composer.
