WIU Fall 2013 Alumni Achievement Recipients
Five Western Illinois University alumni have been selected to receive the WIU Alumni Achievement Award at the Saturday, Dec. 14 Commencement exercises. This year's Alumni Achievement recipients are Stan R. Campbell M.S. '75 (top left), associate vice chancellor for student affairs and director of campus recreation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Roger Clawson '77 (top center), State Farm Agent/owner of Roger Clawson State Farm Agency; John L. Comerford '96 (top right), president of Blackburn College; Richard M. Goldsbury '79 MBA '80 (bottom left), president of the North America and Oceania Regions of Bobcat Company and president of Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment; and Jeff Lorber M.S. '90 (bottom right), vice chancellor for development at the University of Illinois Springfield and senior vice president of the University of Illinois Foundation. Comerford and Goldsbury will be recognized at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony, while Clawson, Campbell and Lorber will be recognized at the 1 p.m. ceremony. Western's Alumni Achievement Award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions in one or more of the following: exceptional accomplishment in one’s chosen field of endeavor; exceptional service in community affairs at the local, state or national levels; or exceptional service in support of the advancement and continued excellence of WIU. Student Alumni Leadership Council Wins National CompetitionThe Western Illinois University's Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) won a national award at the annual Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Affiliated Student Advancement Programs (ASAP) conference in August. WIU SALC won the "Outstanding Tried and True Program" for "Paint the Paws," a yearly campus event where different faculty, clubs and groups on campus paint the Rocky paws on University Drive. SALC began the program in 1988. "We are extremely proud of the Student Alumni Leadership Council on receiving such a prestigious award," said Brad Bainter '79 M.S. '83, vice president for Advancement and Public Services at WIU. "To receive national recognition from CASE, the organization that sets the standards and ethical framework for the Advancement profession, is a true testament to the caliber of students we have at Western Illinois University and as members of SALC here on our campus." SALC entered their nomination and won at the District V level. With that, their application advanced to the national competition and won in August. The WIU SALC is an extension of the WIU Alumni Association, is the only student organization that guarantees networking with WIU alumni and is the governing body for the Student Alumni Association. They collaborate with many other areas of campus serving as hosts, planning campus events, helping with alumni events and have a role in Homecoming festivities. They serve as Student Ambassadors assisting Admissions with campus tours for perspective students. CASE is the professional association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas. Students Receive Citizens Awards
"The only thing I can say about what prompted me to jump in and help the man was that it was what my parents and the rest of my family have taught me. You do everything you can to protect other people in their time of need," said Matthew Demetral, a junior law enforcement and justice administration major from Joliet. According to Owen Hill, a freshman law enforcement major from Joliet, the thought of his own safety didn't even cross his mind. "If someone is in that kind of trouble or danger you do something about it, so we went into the water to help," Hill said. The acts of heroism of Demetral, Hill and Ryan Brushaber, a junior philosophy major from Elk Grove Village, were recognized Nov. 19 by the Macomb Police Department and the City of Macomb. They each received a Citizens Award of Appreciation for their efforts that September day. "Your concern for the community and the well-being of others, as well as your willingness to assist the citizens of this community in a critical incident, is a testament to your selflessness and personal courage," said Deputy Chief Eric Lenardt '91. "It is with great honor that we present to you a Citizens Award of Appreciation." "These students are a credit to Western Illinois University," added President Jack Thomas. "We are so proud of their selfless acts of bravery. They are indicative of the quality students we have on our campus." Go West Records 20 Million in Ridership: Wear Honored as 20 Millionth Rider
In March 2008, Western Illinois University's Go West transit system recorded its 10 millionth rider. Five years later, Macomb resident Stacie Wear can say she has the honor of being the system's 20 millionth passenger, earning that honor Nov. 15 when she boarded the Rt. 18 bus on Madelyn Avenue. Wear was recognized at a celebration on Nov. 18 at the Macomb Transit Center. Go West Director Jude Kiah MBA '03 and Go West Assistant Director Peter Hannen '87 presented Wear with an embroidered backpack and blanket from the University Bookstore, and gift cards, donated by Rialto Cinemas, Wal-Mart and Shoe Sensation, to commemorate the event. C.T. Vivian Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Barack Obama presented Vivian with a medal during a ceremony at the White House. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, established 50 years ago by John F. Kennedy, is the nation's highest civilian honor. The medal has been presented to more than 500 individuals who have made especially "meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." We had a great time at our October Western Wednesdays event in Glenview (IL). If you missed us, be sure to join us for our next installment in Chicago in December. Your WIU Alumni Association began a tradition in 2011 with the first of many Western After Hours! Hundreds of alumni have joined us every month for great food, great conversation and a few beverages. We are continuing our tradition on a NEW bimonthly schedule in downtown Chicago in December and then rotating out to the suburbs and back to downtown over the next year! Saturday, Sept. 7 at Macomb's Spring Lake Park was just another ordinary day spent fishing for three Western Illinois University students. Their day quickly turned extraordinary as they witnessed a car plunge into the lake, which led them to drop their fishing poles and dive into the water to rescue the driver.
