Epperson Gift Achieves WIU's Campaign Goal

Ken and Lorraine EppersonThe Western Illinois University Foundation is pleased to announce that its Higher Values in Higher Education Campaign has met its $60 million goal with a most generous gift from distinguished alums, longtime friends and loyal supporters Dr. Ken '46 '52 and Lorraine Epperson '48 '52.

"Our commitment to Western and to this campaign is a gift of love and appreciation for what Western has meant to us, and an investment in the future of Western and the Center for Performing Arts," said Lorraine.

The Epperson's seven-figure gift, a combination of an outright gift and a bequest, directs $1.5 million to the long-anticipated Center for Performing Arts (CPA) to be located on the southwest side of campus along Western Avenue. Both Ken and Lorraine selflessly worked to bring a Center for Performing Arts to the campus of Western Illinois University and the Macomb community since 1970s.

"The Foundation and WIU are thrilled that this noteworthy gift, the one that achieves our campaign goal, comes from Kenny and Lorraine," said Vice President for Advancement and Public Services Brad Bainter '79 '83. "Their relationship with Western and their history of giving, both of their time and resources, makes this particular gift and attaining this goal all the more meaningful. Truly, all of Western is grateful to them for all they do."

Fall 2013 Enrollment: ACT, GPA Numbers Up, Quad Cities and International Student Enrollment Increase

While Western Illinois University has seen a decline in its total enrollment for Fall 2013, the average ACT score for incoming freshmen at Western now exceeds both the state and national averages, increasing to 21.1 compared to 20.7 in 2012, and the average high school GPA increased to 3.11 in Fall 2013 compared to 3.04 in 2012, according to 10-day enrollment reports.

Total enrollment is 11,707, down 4.1 percent (498 students) from Fall 2012, while the new freshman enrollment is 1,652, down from 1,754 in Fall 2012.

According to Admissions Director Andy Borst, the decrease in freshmen is due largely to 22.4 percent fewer students enrolling through WIU's alternative admissions program. Fall 2013 enrollment at the Western-Macomb campus is 10,205, a decrease of 623 students from Fall 2012 (10,828 total). Enrollment for the Quad Cities campus is 1,502 compared to 1,377 last year.

"While we acknowledge that we face significant recruiting challenges, including a declining number of high school graduates in the state of Illinois and an increasingly competitive market, we are pleased by the academic quality of this year's freshmen. We will continue to recruit high-achieving students within the state and beyond," noted WIU President Jack Thomas.

WIU: 2014 Military Friendly School

Military FriendlyFor the fifth consecutive year, Western Illinois University has been named a "Military Friendly School" and will again be featured in the "G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools," among other Victory Media publications.

According to Victory Media, the 2014 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The list of Military Friendly Schools, which features 1,868 institutions, was compiled through research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide.

"Western's commitment to student-veterans is a part of our history and our institutional mission. We are pleased that G.I. Jobs recognized Western Illinois University for the fourth consecutive year, and that our student-veterans have given us high marks for the services our University provides," said WIU President Jack Thomas.

U.S.News Again Ranks WIU a 'Best Midwestern University'

For the ninth consecutive year, Western Illinois University has been ranked among the best regional universities in U.S.News and World Report's annual College Rankings 2014 edition.

In the U.S.News and World Report rankings, Western is listed 48th of 110 public and private schools on the top tier list of "Best Regional Universities." The institutions appearing on the "Best Regional Universities" list provide a full range of undergraduate majors and masters' programs, but offer few, if any, doctoral programs. The rankings are based on several measures: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.

Of the 39 public universities included, Western is ranked 13th among the 110 Midwestern universities recognized as a "Best Midwestern University."
