PostSecret Project at Western

Frank Warren is the founder of the PostSecret Project: a collection of more than 300,000 personally designed postcards mailed anonymously from around the globe. The secrets that people reveal through the postcards cover topics from hopes, fantasies, sexual desires, embarrassing habits, and funny experiences to racism, sexism, infidelity, eating disorders, drug abuse, and mental health issues.

What started out by handing out blank postcards in a train station has turned into a mail art project that has been featured in art galleries around the world! Warren explains that, “when people think they’re keeping secrets, the truth may be that the secrets are keeping them and could well be affecting relationships and the way people see the world. We finally have a way to tell our secrets without fear of judgment or rejection. In creating a postcard, we release the ownership of our secrets; in reading them, we take a step closer to appreciating just how real, complex, and human we all are."

In 2006, the PostSecret website was awarded “Weblog of the Year” and “Best American Weblog.” Warren has made many television and radio appearances including the Today Show, Good Morning America, 20/20, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Fox News, and the BBC. Join the Office of Student Activities and The Bureau of Cultural Affairs Wednesday, February 11, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the University Union. Admission is free for students; it is $8 for everyone else. Call the OSA at 309-298-3232 or go to www.wiu.edu/bca for ticket information.

David Cook Comes to Western

David CookReigning American Idol winner, David Cook, has announced plans for his first ever solo tour to promote his debut self-titled album, released in November 2008. This will be first time that Cook has been on the road since headlining the American Idol season 7 tour. Cook exclusively unveiled his tour dates on AOL Music’s PopEater.com on Friday, January 23 naming Western as one of the stops on his tour.

One of 37 colleges and universities providing a smaller performance venue of under 800 seats, Western, has been chosen to be a part of Cook’s tour on April 14, 2009. The University Union Board (UUB), the broadest student-run event planning group on Western’s campus, received news of their site selection at the end of January. Tasked to select, plan and implement events and activities for the students on campus, the UUB plans to begin sales to the student population on March 2 at a cost of $20 per ticket. Students will be limited to two tickets per purchase. Any remaining seats will be available to current faculty and staff on the 9th for $20 per ticket, limit 2 tickets per purchase. Sales will be open to the public on the 10th if the venue has not sold out. These tickets will be available for $25, limit 2 tickets per purchase. Sales should close by the 13th of March.  There will be a $3 service charge for all tickets. Tickets will be available on these dates at the Hainline Theater box office located in Browne Hall from 12 noon to 5 p.m. As per the contract with Cook, there will be a limit of 400 seats available for this concert.

Cook entered the Billboard charts at #3 with David Cook (19 Recordings / RCA Records). The Rob Cavallo produced album also debuted as the #1 album on the digital album chart and is the best debut from an American Idol winner since 2006. The first single, “Light On,” dominated the AOL Top 40 radio chart with 8 (non consecutive) weeks at #1. In late September, “Light On” premiered on AOL Music’s pop culture news site, PopEater.com, receiving over 1 million plays in less than week.

Rolling Stone Magazine deemed Cook “the most imaginative American Idol talent to date.”

“I’m more than excited to hop on the road and support this record. This tour represents both a new beginning and a return to form for me,” said Cook.  “It’s our first full tour, and we’re all ready to pour whatever blood, sweat, and tears that we can muster into making this show, and every show from here on out, an experience.  Part of that experience is bringing back this college tour idea.  There’s something inherently nostalgic about playing college shows.  So many amazing acts used to do it, so it’s nice to be able to bring that ideal back, in some small way.  And besides, touring on a bus beats what we used to do, which was cram five guys into a 7 passenger van for one show, 13 hours away...  ”

Cook’s first single, “The Time of My Life” recently went platinum with over one million tracks sold. “The Time of My Life” is not only the biggest single debut but the highest selling coronation single in the show’s history. Cook is the 34th "American Idol" contestant to appear on a Billboard chart.
