From the Director...
Dear Alumni & Friends,
, 2014, we welcome in a new year here at Western Illinois University. We are looking forward to an exciting year, with many events and activities planned for our Alumni and Friends! We hope you'll consider joining us for any of our events, and especially hope you'll mark your calendars for some new and never before held events: in addition to our traditional Homecoming Oct. 3-4, we'll be hosting WIU's Chicago Homecoming the week of
culminating in the WIU vs. Northwestern football game in Chicago. Looking into 2015, I am thrilled to announce your WIU Alumni Association will host 15 simultaneous events around the world on Purple and Gold Day on
Friday, April 24.
The Purple and Gold Day tradition began April 24 , 2000, when the University closed its year-long 100-year celebration with the "Centennial Finale: A Celebration of Purple and Gold." That date in 2000 marked 100 years to the day ( April 24 , 1899) that the Illinois Legislature approved the creation of Western Illinois University, then Western Illinois State Normal School. Members of the University community are encouraged to wear the colors to express their school spirit on that day, and this year, are also encouraged to attend one of the 15 events.
Cities and locations will be announced throughout the coming weeks and months via the website, email, social media and the Western News. Events will include an evening social with food and drinks, along with a message from WIU streamed live to all 15 locations. Be sure to save the date to help us celebrate this great tradition in a way like never before! Join us at a city near you on April 24 , 2015.
Take care and we'll see you around in 2014-15!
