WESL Field Trip to Dairy Farm

On October 8, WESL students went on a field trip to Fairfield, Iowa where they visited an organic dairy farm. The farm tour was very interesting, especially as some tried their hand at milking the cows. Students were able to learn about organic farming methods while getting a better idea about life in rural America. In preparation for this trip, students discussed farming and rural life with their Conversation Mentors.

International Students Try Their Hand at Pumpkin Carving

International Student Services hosted a pumpkin carving event on Saturday, October 11 in the basement of the International House. Students from various countries were able to choose their own pumpkin and their own design to carve. Not only did they get a chance to express their creativity, but they also learned about the folk origins of the jack-o-lantern. Traditional fall treats such as apple cider, caramel apples, pumpkin bread, and roasted pumpkin seeds were served.

2009 'Rocky Goes Global' Study Abroad Calendar

The Office of Study Abroad is currently working on putting together a 2009 calendar featuring photographs submitted by WIU students who studied abroad in 2008. The photos used are the same photos that were on display in the Study Abroad booth at last February’s International Bazaar. Calendars will be ready November 14 and make lovely gifts for the upcoming holiday season. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar, please contact the Office of Study Abroad at (309) 298-2504 or send an e-mail to StudyAbroad@wiu.edu.

International Education Week

In conjunction with the WIU community, the Center for International Studies is currently planning activities for this year’s International Education Week. The week long celebration will contain events focusing on native dress, cuisine, dance, current issues, trivia, and presentations on culture and international experiences. The final schedule of events will be posted in early November, so please check the Center for International Studies website for more information. Come enjoy the diversity of WIU!

World Café Coffee Hour on Australia

The WIU community enjoyed learning about Australia and sampling Australian treats at the World Café Coffee Hour on October 22. The audience was able to gain insight into Australian culture while listening to a native Australian speak about her country. She included some basic information about the country and made interesting cultural comparisons, adding that seeing a kangaroo is as common to an Australian as seeing a squirrel is to an American. Lammington, an Australian dessert was served. Students interacted by asking questions about the country and socialized with the speaker and other attendees after the presentation.
