Club Wetzel
Everybody loves to party! But what happens when the party is a non-alcoholic social gathering sponsored by Wetzel Hall? For starters, a packed house; about 520 people, attended the September 18 Club-Wetzel program.
The event, started in the 1990’s, is normally held in one of the lounges in Wetzel Hall. This year ‘The Underground’, a newly remodeled space in Bay-Henn, provided a great spot for the occasion. Club Wetzel is an annual educational event, with a focus on Alcohol Awareness. The staff at Wetzel Hall aims to provide a passive programming approach to presenting the information to the students in a fun, energetic way.
Throughout the evening three big screen TV’s displayed a series of factoids, questions and answers about the influences of alcohol and episodic drinking. Students were given a page of questions when they entered the club and could find the answers on the TVs. The first 50 students to correctly answer their questions received a free T-shirt. Several informative booths were also provided by the Beu Health Center’s AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) and Curt Bilbrey from the Office of Public Safety. AOD sponsored the ‘Beer Goggles” Bean Bag Toss. If students thought they were bad at the bean bag toss sober, they were really surprised at how difficult the task became after putting on the Beer Goggles. Officer Bilbrey’s display spotlighted the club atmosphere and what students need to be aware of, from drug tainting of beverages to binge drinking.
But no non-alcoholic party is complete without music and beverages. DJ Robert Wrath kept the dance floor full all evening. The Wetzel RA Staff serve the refreshments that included fruity concoctions like Orange Flamingos, Pina Coladas, Strawberry Daiquiris and Studio 54 Afterglow mocktails.
Wetzel Hall has already received two awards for their Club Wetzel program, the RA Council and IHC’s Program of the Week Award, not to mention the reviews from the students who labeled the event as ‘great’ and 'awesome'.
