2009 "Rocky Goes Global" Calendars Available

The Office of Study Abroad is currently selling its 2009 “Rocky Goes Global” Study Abroad calendar. The calendar features photographs taken by WIU students during their study abroad programs. Calendars are $10 each, and money raised from the calendar sale will go toward creating scholarships that will enable more WIU students to participate in study abroad programs. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar, contact the Office of Study Abroad at (309) 298-2504 or by email at StudyAbroad@wiu.edu.

Study Abroad Scholarship Recipients

The Office of Study Abroad recently awarded scholarships to several students planning to study abroad in the spring semester. The James F. and Syndy M. Conger Study Abroad Scholarship was awarded to one student in the amount of $250, and the WIU Study Abroad Scholarship was awarded to one student in the amount of $500. Two $250 travel grants were awarded to students participating in the faculty-led Costa Rican Tropical Ecology group. Two students in the faculty-led Agriculture Down Under group were also recipients of travel grants for $250 and $750.

International Education Week

The Center for International Studies organized an International Education Week to coincide with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education's annual International Education Week. Many events were held during International Education Week at Western, beginning with a Cultural Cafe presentation on Iran (with an introduction from President Al Goldfarb) and ending with the First Ever International Trivia Night. Many more events and presentations were held during the week, including: an international faculty potluck, a World-Cup indoor soccer tournament, a performance by an Irish musician, a Spanish cooking class, Barefoot Polynesian Dance performances, and presentations on the value of studying and traveling abroad.

WESL Students Experience Halloween

The students of WESL Institute (Western’s English as a Second Language Institute) experienced American Halloween traditions at the WESL Halloween party at WIU’s Horn Field Campus on October 30. Thirty-five students and several WESL teachers and staff members enjoyed a hot dog roast, games, pumpkin carving, and a folk song sing-along on a beautiful autumn afternoon and evening. Many of the participants came in costumes, and everyone got into the fun of Halloween. The students, who are attending WESL to develop their skills in academic English, come from a variety of overseas locations, including Turkmenistan, Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Korea, Germany, and Taiwan.
