Thomas Named WIU Provost

Jack Thomas"Jack" Jackie Thomas, senior vice provost for academic affairs and professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, has been named provost and academic vice president at Western Illinois University, effective Jan. 1, 2008.

President Al Goldfarb said Thomas, who was highly recommended by the Provost Search Committee, will bring broad leadership experiences to Western. He replaces Joe Rallo, who left WIU in May to become president at Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX. Rallo had served as Western's provost since July 2003.

Western Launches Emergency Notification System

To keep the Western Illinois University campus communities informed in the event of an emergency, Western has established the WIU Emergency Alert System (WEAS). The first multi-campus test of the system's phone, text, and e-mail messaging capabilities will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008. However, the WIU Emergency Alert System was activated Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 to notify WIU-Quad Cities faculty, staff and students that the Quad Cities campus was closed due to inclement weather. According to Vice President for Administrative Services Jackie Thompson, the system worked as planned and alerts were sent to more than 1,500 students, faculty and staff affected by the closure.

The system, which is contracted by The NTI Group, Inc. through its Connect-ED software, will notify WIU students, faculty, staff and visitors at both the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses of emergency situations (severe weather, serious threats to safety, etc.) via phone and text messages and e-mails.

IBHE Approves Nursing Degree Program at WIU

The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) recently approved a Western Illinois University request to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

The BSN degree, which was approved by Western's Board in June 2007, was created to meet the demand for additional education for nursing professionals in western Illinois. The 121- to 124-semester hour degree program will serve registered nurses who have completed an associate degree or a three-year diploma program.

From President Goldfarb

I want to thank those who took time out of their busy schedules to attend WIU Alumni and Friends Events this past year and hope that you will continue to attend future events.

I know that all of us live complex, busy and hurried lives, and we are all confronted with professional, familial and personal responsibilities. In the midst of our daily lives, it is hard to imagine adding one more event or activity. Still, I would like to encourage all of you to consider attending one alumni event this year and to rebuild your Western connections. Those of you who already participate in our events know the great joy of interacting with alumni from all generations and meeting with faculty and staff members. In addition, you have the opportunity to learn about new initiatives at Western and to ask questions about current campus issues.
