Phi Eta Sigma Re-chartered | Western Illinois Lincoln Academy Student Laureate: Julia Remes

Phi Eta Sigma Re-chartered

Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest freshman academic honorary in the nation, returned to Western Illinois University in Fall 2007 after a four-year absence with an Oct. 21 re-chartering and induction ceremony on campus.

The re-chartering of the academic honorary, that had been active at Western for 30 years (1973-2003), was launched as part of Western's first-year student initiatives for academic excellence, said William Knox, director of Western Illinois' Centennial Honors College. Eligible students - - those who had earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average in a program leading to a bachelor's degree during either of their freshmen semesters - - were contacted, and more than 80 responded, Knox added.

Approximately 50 students attended the Oct. 21 ceremonies, including the new executive board of sophomore students: president Michael Kwiatkowski (Mundelein, IL), a double major in law enforcement and justice administration and economics; vice president Kate Harrington (Streamwood, IL), a communication sciences and disorders major; secretary Nikita Minder (Princeville, IL), an elementary education major; and treasurer Natalie Calendo (Schaumburg, IL), a sophomore marketing major and fashion merchandising minor.

Executive board members and National Chapter Grand Secretary Treasurer John Sagabiel from Western Kentucky University participated in the ceremony. Knox, Western Illinois President Al Goldfarb, Assistant Provost Judy Dallinger and College of Arts and Science Associate Dean Susan Martinelli-Fernandez were recognized as honorary members.

Phi Eta Sigma encourages continued high academic achievement and service. Students who are active members are able to qualify for leadership roles, invitations to the national conference and more than 1,000 national annual scholarships that range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Nationally, Phi Eta Sigma has initiated more than 900,000 members and has chartered more than 350 chapters.
