MACOMB, IL –According to the World AIDS Day website (www.worldaidsday.org), around 40 million people are living with HIV throughout the world—and that number increases in every region every day.

Western Illinois University will join with people from around the world to recognize World AIDS Day (officially Saturday, Dec. 1) by offering HIV/AIDS awareness events Thursday-Friday, Nov. 29-30 in the WIU and Macomb communities.

Representatives from Western's Beu Health Center, together with the McDonough County Health Department (MCHD), and the Illinois Department of Public Health, will provide awareness activities from 3:30-5 p.m Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Macomb High School commons. The program will include resource materials and guest speakers from Beu Health Center and MCHD; and an announcement of winners of poster, essay, and poetry contests about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

The WIU Women's Center will sponsor information tables from 11 a.m.-2 p.m Friday, Nov. 30 in the University Union Concourse, which will offer resource materials about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, as well as free red ribbons provided by the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) Victim Services Agency.

Established by the World Health Organization in 1988, World AIDS Day serves to focus global attention on the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Observance of this day provides an opportunity for governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations and individuals to demonstrate the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS.
