Athletics Sees ‘Best Academic Semester' On Record
The Western Illinois University department of intercollegiate athletics had it's most successful academic period on record during the Fall 2007 semester, evidenced by an overall department grade point average of 2.971 and 10 percent of its student-athletes recording perfect 4.0 GPAs.
“Clearly our coaches and student-athletes have met the challenge of the university's core value of academic excellence,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. “This is the best academic semester we have on record. They continue to outperform their resources while exceeding expectations, both academically and athletically.”
Of 399 student-athletes, 56 percent earned a GPA of at least 3.0, including 39 who maintained a perfect 4.0 mark, and 22 percent earned academic honors.
Eleven of the 18 teams earned a 3.0 or better GPA. The women's tennis team earned the highest GPA (3.546) among female teams, while the baseball team was the top academic male team with a 3.155 GPA.
“(Academic advisor) Lisa Melz has done a terrific job of providing the much needed guidance and motivation to all of our teams,” continued Van Alstine.
The total department's grade point average was nearly one-tenth of a point above the overall Macomb campus GPA of 2.88.

Waste Management Court at Western Hall Officially Dedicated with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Waste Management Director of Operations Steve Fedash and Account Manager Dale Rockhold joined members of the Western Illinois University administration January 24 to present the Western Illinois Athletics Department with a $100,000 donation and officially dedicate Waste Management Court at Western Hall.
“We are very proud to partner with Waste Management,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. “This partnership, along with our other corporate sponsors such as McDonough District Hospital, Citizens National Bank and First Bankers Trust, will help
provide not only athletics, but the university and the entire Macomb community a bright future. These partners assist us in advancing the overall educational process of our students. We owe a lot of this particular partnership to the hard work of (former marketing director) Cindy Green.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at halftime of Western Illinois' men's basketball victory over IPFW. Both basketball teams and the volleyball team will play their home games on Waste Management Court at Western Hall for the next 10 years.
