Pair of Alumni to Start in Super Bowl XLII

Leathernecks have been represented on five of the last six Super Bowl champion teams

Rich SeubertA pair of former Western Illinois University players are expected to start in Super Bowl XLII, as New York Giants offensive guard Rich Seubert (right) and New England Patriots strong safety Rodney Harrison square off this weekend, guaranteeing the sixth time in the last seven years that the Leathernecks have been represented on the world championship team. Just two weeks ago, during both the AFC and NFC Championship Games, three out of the four teams had WIU players in the starting lineup.

Seubert, who played at Western Illinois from 1997-2000, will appear in the first Super Bowl of his career, while Harrison, a 1991-93 Leatherneck, will be in his fourth.

Twelve former Leathernecks have been members of 28 Super Bowl match-ups throughout history (including this week), and this year marks the seventh time that at least two alumni will be on the field.

Additionally, the last eight Super Bowl teams that have included a Leatherneck alumnus have been victorious. Click here to see the list of the former Leathernecks.

Buffalo Wild Wings Will Soon Open in Macomb

Buffalo Wild WingsIf you are planning a trip back to Macomb, you will soon have a new place to dine. Starting this month, you'll be able to enjoy Buffalo Wild Wing's newest location--Macomb. Construction on the restaurant began in the fall and the new restaurant is scheduled to open at the end of February.

The chain is offering an incentive to the first 100 people to walk through the doors. Each will receive free chicken wings for the entire year.

Broadcasting Students Selected to Intern at the Olympics

WIU Broadcasting StudentsWIU broadcasting students Liz Bales and Lindsay Oconnell are heading to the Olympics. They will not be competing; rather, they will be working to bring the information to you. The two students were selected by the NBC Olympic Internship Committee and will be working in Beijing, China at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

About 1500 students from around the world applied for these coveted positions. It was the chair of WIU's broadcasting department, Dr. Sharon Evans, who helped the two students secure the internships. Evans spent the last two years trying to connect with NBC's Olympic Internship Committee. After Evans talked with the NBC internship coordinators last summer, WIU's broadcasting students were invited to apply for the internships. In October, Evans took eleven broadcasting students to Chicago to interview for the internships. Western was one of only six schools to be interviewed; the students competed against others from Notre Dame, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, University of Michigan and University of Southern California.

Liz and Lindsay will travel to Beijing at the end of July where they will be working for NBC as production assistants for approximately four weeks.

Evans says she is very proud of Liz and Lindsay. “They will represent the broadcasting department and the university well in Beijing,” said Evans.

Evans says this is the first time WIU students have interned with the NBC Olympics program. Former broadcasting students have interned at MTV, Disney, Oprah, ESPN, and the Discover Channel, among others.
