MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University department of intercollegiate athletics had its most successful academic period on record during the Fall 2007 semester, evidenced by an overall department grade point average of 2.971 and 10 percent of its student-athletes recording perfect 4.0 GPAs.

"Clearly our coaches and student-athletes have met the challenge of the University's core value of academic excellence," said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. "This is the best academic semester we have on record. They continue to outperform their resources while exceeding expectations, both academically and athletically."

Of 399 student-athletes, 56 percent earned a GPA of at least 3.0, including 39 who maintained a perfect 4.0 mark; and 22 percent earned academic honors.

Eleven of the 18 teams earned a 3.0 or better GPAs. The women's tennis team earned the highest GPA (3.546) among female teams, while the baseball team was the top academic male team with a 3.155 GPA.

"(Academic advisor) Lisa Melz has done a terrific job of providing the much needed guidance and motivation to all of our teams," continued Van Alstine.

The total department's grade point average was nearly one-tenth of a point above the overall Macomb campus GPA of 2.88.
