25 Fighting Leathernecks Awarded Degrees

On Saturday, 25 Fighting Leathernecks were awarded their degrees for completing their studies at Western Illinois University.

The 2010 Winter commencement ceremony honored 22 student-athletes who received their Bachelor's degree and three students who received their Master's degree.

Glazier Named AP All-American

Kyle Glazier photoWestern Illinois' Kyle Glazier (Geneseo/Geneseo) picked up his second All-America honor in as many days as the senior linebacker was voted First Team by the Associated Press.

He joins Jason Williams (2008), Edgerton Hartwell (2000), James Milton (1998) and Rodney Harrison (1993) as the only Leatherneck defensive players to earn AP First Team honors over the past 20 years.

Leatherneck Football Receives Banner from City of Macomb

City of Macomb bannerHead coach Mark Hendrickson and the Western Illinois Football team received a celebratory welcome home last Saturday (Dec. 4) by the City of Macomb following the Second Round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

During the final part of the trip home Western's travel party received a police escort into Macomb, and was greeted by state and local agencies. Mayor Mick Wisslead, city officials and business leaders from around town gave the Leathernecks an autographed banner, showing their support for the program's success in 2010.

2011 Softball Schedule Released

Western Illinois head softball coach Holly Van Vlymen announced the team's schedule for the upcoming 2011 season on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

The Fighting Leathernecks will again face tough tests in both the non-league and Summit League portions of its schedule. Western will face two teams which advanced to last year's NCAA Regionals as well as teams from the Big XII, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC.

Indoor Track Season Underway

Nikki Klier photoThe Western Illinois track and field program collected nine top 3 finishes when the Fighting Leathernecks opened the 2010-11 indoor track and field season at the Early Bird Open inside Horton Field House on the campus of Illinois State University Saturday (Dec. 4).

First-year head coach David Beauchem was pleased with his squad's first performance of the winter.

"Today's meet was a great start to the season," Beauchem said. "We faced some very good competition for December. After next Saturday's meet at Iowa State, we must stay committed to the training during the upcoming break. We had a number of top 3 finishes and this squad's potential for success started to show a little more today."

Softball Announces New Assistant Coach

Liz Young photoWestern Illinois head softball coach Holly Van Vlymen announced the hiring of Liz Young as the team's new assistant coach on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

She will serve as the team's hitting instructor and will also work closely with the outfielders and catchers while also assisting in recruiting and other day-to-day operations.
