MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees approved contractors for the heating plant renewal project and the electrical work for Corbin and Olson halls at its Dec. 17 meeting in Macomb.

The board approved a $2.6 million total bid package for the heating plant project (Trotter General Contracting of Macomb, general, $253,202; The PIPCO Companies of Peoria, mechanical, $1.2 million; Roy Keith Electric Co. of Farmington, electrical, $886,000; J.A. Fritch & Sons of Peoria, ventilation, $6,995; The PIPCO Companies, plumbing, $62,400). A $115,000 contingency was included in the total bid package.

The board approved a $3.6 million electrical bid for the Corbin and Olson halls renovation project. The bid was awarded to Tri-City Electrical Company of Iowa (Davenport) for $3.6 million, with a $130,000 contingency. This job was originally awarded to another contractor; however, the company was unable to provide the required performance bond, therefore, the contract was awarded to the next lowest bidder.

In addition, the board passed a resolution to sell certificates of participation to complete capital improvement projects. The improvements include roof replacements, electrical upgrades, building repairs and maintenance, heating and cooling upgrades, classroom equipment replacement and science lab upgrades ($6 million) and replacing steam lines serving 1.5 million square feet and the construction of 2,700 linear feet of walk and shallow tunnels ($5 million).

The board also approved an updated University mission statement. The new statement is: By enacting our values and creating a synergy between instruction, research, creativity and service, Western Illinois University prepares and supports a socially responsible, diverse student, faculty, and staff population to lead in the global society.

Following the regularly scheduled open meeting, the board convened to a second executive session to discuss the presidential search.

The next Board of Trustees meeting is March 25, 2011 at the WIU-Macomb campus.
