Leathernecks Honored at Academic Excellence Banquet

Brooke Stittleburg photoThe Western Illinois Athletics Department honored both student-athletes and faculty members at its Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet on Monday, April 25 in the University Union.

Members of the Western Illinois University administration, deans of the Colleges and faculty members joined student-athletes that carried a cumulative 3.5 GPA and been enrolled at Western for at least two semesters. Sixty-seven Leatherneck student-athletes met the criteria, and they were able to invite one of their professors to the banquet.

Leatherneck Football Concludes Spring Practice

Karen Craddock photoWestern Illinois wrapped up the 2011 spring season with the annual Bruce Craddock Memorial Spring Game on Saturday, April 23 at Hanson Field. The Leathernecks ran it similar to the two prior scrimmages, working on all facets while running more than 50 plays of 11-on-11 on the day.

The offense scored two touchdowns on the day, but committed two turnovers both on fumbles. Western's defense recorded eight sacks. The scrimmage consisted of drives starting at various yard lines.

Best-Ever Summit League Finish for Women's Golf

Tara Peterman photoThree highly successful seniors finished their final year as Leathernecks this afternoon at the Summit League Championships in Primm, Nev. Tara Peterman, Lindsay Wandrey and Claire Gursh closed out their careers in style as they helped produce the lowest round of the season. The Purple & Gold finished the three-round event with a 938 (315,320,303).

"We shot a team low and overall it could not have gone much better," stated head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "We talked a lot about closing and not giving shots away and I am proud of how the team did that today."

JD Gravina Introduced as Women's Basketball Coach

JD Gravina photoWestern Illinois University officially welcomed JD Gravina as women's basketball head coach during a Monday, April 18 press conference inside Western Hall. Gravina becomes the seventh head coach in Leatherneck women's basketball history.

Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine announced the hiring last Friday, and he introduced the newest member of Leatherneck Athletics in front of a capacity crowd inside the Hall of Fame room Monday. Gravina and his wife Meredith were welcomed by members of the University and Macomb community.

Softball Helps Promote "Homers for Hodgkin's"

Ashley Campbell photoThe Western Illinois Softball team took time out of its schedule on Thursday, April 14 to promote the upcoming "Homers for Hodgkin's" campaign.

The Fighting Leathernecks spent part of the afternoon playing wiffleball with students on campus and informing them of the weekend fundraiser, which will help raise support for the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

"It was a lot of fun out there today," said assistant coach Liz Young. "We had several students come out who hadn't ever swung a bat before and it was fun to see them enjoying their time out there. The team had a great time playing ball and informing people too."

Stittleburg & Lynes to Attend Career in Sports Forum

Brooke Stittleburg/Chelsea Lynes photoWestern Illinois University Athletics announced that two student-athletes have been selected to attend the 2011 NCAA Career in Sports Forum, which will take place from June 12-15 in Indianapolis. Sophomore Chelsea Lynes (Track/Field and Cross Country) and junior Brooke Stittleburg (Volleyball) were selected by the NCAA to represent the Fighting Leathernecks. 

The four-day event allows selected student-athletes to explore and receive education on various careers in sports, with a primary focus on collegiate athletics. Student-athletes will examine the viability of selecting coaching or athletics administration as a full-time or part-time career. They will also benefit from the opportunity to network with key decision makers from member institutions and the NCAA.
