WIU-QC Riverfront Campus Groundbreaking

Quad Cities Groundbreaking photo oneHistory was made on March 31 as the official groundbreaking for the Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Riverfront Campus took place at Building One along River Drive in Moline.

Businesses, industries, local organizations and higher education have banded together over the past few years to lobby for the new campus, and have been met with support from the State of Illinois to expand educational opportunities for the Quad Cities region.

Quad Cities Groundbreaking photo two"Today's groundbreaking is a victory not only for all our partners - University officials, lawmakers, community advocates, teachers and parents - who worked tirelessly for many years to make this project happen," said Gov. Pat Quinn. "It is also a victory for the 1,400 students who attend WIU-Quad Cities today and the more than 3,000 students who will be able to attend this fine Quad Cities campus when this project is completed."

WIU Promotes Military Friendly Status

Military Friendly logoAs a part of its commitment to its four values of Academic Excellence, Educational Opportunity, Personal Growth, and Social Responsibility, Western is proud to serve as a resource for our country’s veterans. This academic year, Western has been named a “military friendly” school by G.I. Jobs Magazine. This recognition is a nice endorsement of Western’s efforts to assist our veterans in their transition to post-active duty life.

As a part of promoting our military friendly status, Western is featuring current Quad Cities BOT/BA student, Staff Sergeant Allen Porter, on an illuminated sign in the main terminal of the Quad Cities airport.

“Many area military travel through the Quad Cities airport on a weekly basis. It is our hope that this sign will help our active military, reservists, and veterans know that Western is here for them,” said Kristin Dunstan, Director of University Marketing.

Another accomplishment Western is proud of is the recent opening of its dedicated Veterans Resource Center at the Wright House in Macomb.  For more information on WIU’s veteran services, contact the Veteran Resource Center at VeteransResources@wiu.edu or phone 309/298-3505.

Olson to Close May 1

Olson photoTo prepare for its "extreme makeover," the Western Illinois University Olson Hall Conference Center will close May 1.

According to John Biernbaum, assistant vice president of student services-residence life, due to current capacities in the additional eight residence halls on the Macomb campus, special events that are typically held in Olson Hall will be discontinued during the construction. Lodging for such events as Homecoming, Family Weekend, Mom's Weekend, Dad's Weekend and other programs held during the academic year will be reconsidered once construction is complete. In addition, housing during Thanksgiving, winter holiday and spring breaks will also be discontinued.

2010 Census: It Counts

Western Illinois University Libraries' Government Information and Data Services Librarian Linda Zellmer is encouraging people to fill out their 2010 Census forms.

"According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2010 Census determines how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year for the next 10 years will be spent on infrastructure and services," Zellmer noted. "The information compiled from the census determines the amount of state and federal dollars the area receives, so it is vital that every McDonough County resident be counted."
