Doug Ruse Named Offensive Coordinator

Doug Ruse photoWestern Illinois Football head coach Mark Hendrickson announced the hiring of Doug Ruse as offensive coordinator. Ruse begins his duties immediately.

Ruse takes over as offensive coordinator for Hendrickson, who was named as the program's head coach in December after serving as the Leathernecks' offensive coordinator for 11 years and two stints as acting head coach (2008 and 2009).

An eight year veteran at Arkansas State, Ruse also served as the quarterbacks coach in addition to his coordinator duties. Over the last three seasons Ruse has mentored two All-Sun Belt Conference quarterbacks, including 2007 Davey O'Brien semifinalist Corey Leonard.

2010 Football Kickoff Times Announced

Kickoff times for Western Illinois' six home football games during theMark Hendrickson photo 2010 season have been set. Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine made the announcement on March 4.

The Fighting Leathernecks open the campaign at Hanson Field against Valparaiso on Thursday, September 2 at 6 p.m.

Western will host consecutive home games on Sept. 18th and 25th. The final non-conference regular season game will be a 1 p.m. kick against Sam Houston State (Sept. 18). Missouri Valley Football Conference play will begin on the 25th against Indiana State. The game, part of Homecoming 2010 activities, is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Peterman Repeats as Summit League Golfer of the Week

Kyle Peterman photoWestern Illinois senior Kyle Peterman earned his second-consecutive Summit League Golfer of the Week honor for his performance at the Jackrabbit Invitational.

Peterman shot 212 over three rounds to finish the tournament in second place individually. The finish marked his fifth top-three finish of the 2009-10 season, as the senior has only finished outside the top five once in eight tournaments for the Fighting Leathernecks.

Pankratz Honored

Senior softball player Lori Pankratz has been selected as the DepartmentLori Pankratz photo of Biological Sciences Most Outstanding Undergraduate Student.
 
“The Western Illinois athletics department is proud of Lori for earning the distinction as the biology’s departmental scholar of the year,” said Western Illinois Athletics Director Dr. Tim Van Alstine. “Our athletics department has a rich history of student-athletes who have earned a variety of academic accolades and Lori only adds to that tradition.”
