Bryce Flowers Named MVFC Newcomer of the Week

Bryce Flowers photoBryce Flowers (Pittsburg, CA/Pittsburg) picked up his second 'Newcomer of the Week' award by the Missouri Valley Football Conference, helping Western Illinois to a convincing 40-7 Homecoming win over Indiana State on Saturday (Sept. 25). Flowers earned the award for the second time this month (Sept. 5 following Valparaiso game).

The freshman running back recorded a personal-high 192 rushing yards on 26 carries, averaging 7.4 yards per attempt. He matched a personal-high scoring two touchdowns on the slippery field as it rained the entire game. Western rushed for a season-high 384 yards in the conference-opening win.

Two Student-Athletes Named Summit League SAAC Officers

The Summit League logoThe Summit League recently announced its newly-elected Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) officers for the 2010-11 academic year following its annual meeting last month. Two Western Illinois student-athletes were voted to executive positions with the organization.

Senior golfer Tim Harwood was voted as the League's SAAC President while junior volleyball player Brooke Stittleburg was selected asRocky Secretary. North Dakota State women's basketball player Abby Pluckerwas named Vice President.

Western Illinois Student-Athletes Help Out on Family Fun Night

Fun Night photoSeveral Western Illinois student-athletes volunteered their time and energy at Lincoln Elementary School's "Family Fun Night" on Thursday, Sept. 23.

The event featured carnival games, inflatables and food for children in grades K-3 and their families. The "Family Fun Night" was staffed by more than 100 volunteers, many of whom were Fighting Leatherneck student-athletes.
