22nd Annual Purple & Gold Auction a Success

Western Hall was transformed on Saturday night as the 22nd Annual Purple & Gold Gala Auction took place. The event drew over 400 people and the funds raised will go towards completing the weight room renovations.

Clements Named Assistant Coach for Leatherneck Volleyball

Mallory Clements photoMallory Clements, a former SIU-Edwardsville volleyball standout and assistant coach, has been named assistant volleyball coach. Tenth-year Western Illinois head coach Kym McKay announced the hiring Monday.

Clements comes to Macomb from SIU-Edwardsville, where she spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach under former Cougar head coach Todd Gober. Clements was highly involved in day-to-day administrative duties including coordinating travel, fundraising efforts, recruiting and organizing practices. Clements also served as interim head coach for a short time before the Cougars named Leah Johnson head coach in April.

Klier and Manning Named To USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Team

Senior Nikki Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) and junior Nichole Manning (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka) were named to the Division I All-Academic Track & Field team as announced Thursday (Aug. 4) by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  

Manning and Klier both demonstrated exemplary performance both in the classroom and on the track. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25.

Women's Track and Field Earns National All-Academic Team Honor

The Western Illinois women's track and field squad added another impressive academic honor as the Fighting Leathernecks earned Division I All-Academic status as announced Thursday (Aug. 11) by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  

In order to earn the All-Academic distinction, a squad must own a cumulative team grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or better. The Fighting Leathernecks finished the spring 2011 semester with a 3.32 cumulative team GPA, which was the second highest amongst all Summit League schools. Fellow league members South Dakota State (3.44 GPA) and North Dakota State (3.30 GPA) also earned All-Academic status.

Three from Western Named to Summit League Top 30

Summit League logoThree standout members of the Western Illinois Athletics Department were honored by being named to The Summit League's 30th Anniversary List of 'Top 30' Distinguished Contributors. Former Athletics Director Dr. Helen Smiley, Zane Teilane of women's basketball and Aubrey Martin of track and field represented Western.

The Summit League's Top 30 Distinguished Contributors were determined by voting by a panel of representatives from each current Summit League member institution and each former league member of at least five years along with members of the media who regularly cover the league. Nearly 100 total candidates were originally chosen for consideration based on nominations and individual achievements.

Leathernecks Continue Relationship with Macomb Special Olympics

The Western Illinois women's soccer team didn't let preparation for a road match with the Iowa Hawkeyes and a home clash with St. Ambrose stop them from taking the opportunity to visit with Special Olympic athletes from Macomb at Digger's Bowling Alley Tuesday evening.

The team jogged over in full uniform after a practice session to discuss the upcoming season and visit with the athletes.

The McDonough County Special Recreation Association (MCSRA) was in attendance on Sunday when the Purple & Gold opened its home season against St. Ambrose at MacKenzie Alumni Field.
