Sixty-Six Leathernecks Awarded Degrees

Athletics Graduation photoSixty-six Western Illinois University student-athletes were awarded degrees at the class of 2011 graduation ceremonies held in Western Hall Saturday, May 14.

The 2011 Spring/Summer commencement ceremony honored 62 student-athletes who received their Bachelor's degree and four students who received their Master's degree.

"I am very proud of the Spring/Summer 2011 graduating class," said Lisa Melz, Director of Athletic Academic Services and Senior Woman Administrator. "In my tenure, it is the largest class of student-athlete graduates by number at Western Illinois University."

JD Gravina Hires Three Assistants

JD Gravina photoWestern Illinois women's basketball head coach JD Gravina announced the hiring of three assistant coaches for his staff. The Leathernecks' first-year head coach hired Kerry Juhlin, Tiffany Coppage and Seth Minter as full-time assistant coaches. Gravina also announced that Jessie Biggs will return as graduate assistant coach.

"I am extremely excited about the staff's combination of experience and positive, energetic personalities. I am very thankful that we are able to hire three full time assistant coaches," said Gravina. "By December all three assistants will have attained a master's degree, demonstrating the fact that my staff and I are committed to success on the court and in the classroom."

Billy Wright Promoted to Associate Head Coach

Billy Wright photoWestern Illinois men's basketball head coach Jim Molinari announced that Billy Wright has been promoted to associate head coach. Wright enters his fourth year on the Leatherneck staff.

Wright assists with recruiting, scouting, game scheduling, player development, on-court coaching, and monitoring the academic progress of the Leatherneck student-athletes. During his three seasons Western has had at least one All-Summit League selection, including 2009-10 'Defensive Player of the Year' Ceola Clark III. The Leathernecks have also succeeded in the classroom, having two student-athletes earn First Team Academic All-District honors during their tenure.

Two Leathernecks Named NSCA All-American

NSCA All-American photoTwo Western Illinois University student-athletes were recently named to the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American list.

Volleyball junior Brooke Stittleburg (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) and men's basketball senior Arsenio Mims (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff) received the 2010-11 award.

The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning "Athletes of the Year" program recognizes those collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. These athletes are also recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes.

Stittleburg Named to NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

Brooke Stittleburg photoWestern Illinois junior Brooke Stittleburg (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) has been selected as The Summit League representative to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Stittleburg, a left side hitter on the Fighting Leatherneck volleyball team, is one of just 31 student-athletes across the nation that were chosen to represent their respective athletic conferences on the national committee.

Softball Earns NCAA Public Recognition Award

Holly Van Vlymen photoThe Western Illinois Softball team was recognized by the NCAA for its performance in the classroom when it was awarded with the NCAA Public Recognition Award.

The award is given annually to teams scoring in the top-10 percent of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and is based on a team's multi-year performance in the APR reports.

The NCAA's annual APR report provides institutions with a barometer to measure academic success by keeping track of eligibility and retention rates each semester.
