Nicholas Joseph DiGrino Memorial Scholarship for Special Ed Majors Established at WIU

In honor of their son, Nick and Susan DiGrino of Macomb have recently established the Nicholas Joseph DiGrino Memorial Scholarship for Western Illinois University students who major in special education.

Nicholas Joseph DiGrino died in 1983. His father, Nick DiGrino, dean of the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) at WIU, recalled that a good friend of his wife, Susie, cross-stitched a sampler for them that read, "His song will be sung, if we do the singing."

"I have remembered and thought about that saying over the years," DiGrino said. "This scholarship represents one more opportunity to sing Nicholas' song."

Kid University

Want something fun and educational for your middle school child to do this summer? Consider the Department of Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality's Kid University. Children grades 4-8 will have the opportunity to enroll in sessions according to their interests. Sessions include Dazzling Desserts, Fanatic About Fashion, Culinary Adventures and Crazy with Computers.

Greathouse Named Chair of DFMH

Dr. Karen Greathouse has been named Chair of the Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality department effective July 1, 2011, after serving as interim chair of the department since July 2009. She began her career at WIU in 1989 as an assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 2004. She received a teacher of the year award in 1994 from COEHS and was named the Illinois Dietetics Association Outstanding Educator of the Year in 2000.
