Kim Receives Inaugural International Alumni Achievement Award

Nardi Named 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Nardi, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of Navigant Consulting, Inc., will be recognized Saturday, May 15 when he is presented the Western Illinois University Distinguished Alumnus Award at the Spring 2010 Commencement Exercises.

WIU Selected as Model Institution for Degree Completion

WIU logoAccording to the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works with 16 member states to improve public pre-K-12 and higher education, relatively few state leaders and citizens realize that the average college-completion rates fall well below high school graduation rates. In SREB's recent report, "Promoting a Culture of Student Success," Western Illinois University was cited among just 15 U.S. colleges and universities – and was the only Illinois university listed – that are outperforming most similar institutions in helping students succeed and graduate.

Victor Hicken, Noted Historian and Distinguished Professor, Passes Away

Victor Hicken photoVictor Hicken, noted historian, prolific writer and Western Illinois University's first Distinguished Professor, passed away April 8 in Iowa City (IA). He was 88 years old.

Hicken was hired at WIU in 1947, and served as chair of the WIU history department from 1967-1969. He was instrumental in establishing the University Archives and went on to document the history of the University in the book "The Purple and the Gold: The Story of Western Illinois University." In 1976, he was voted Illinois Author of the Year by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. During his last five years at WIU, he held the position of Distinguished Professor, the first and only WIU professor to be awarded this honor by a faculty committee.

Martinelli-Fernandez Named CAS Dean

Sue Martinelli-Fernandez photoSusan Martinelli-Fernandez, College of Arts and Sciences interim dean at Western Illinois University, has been named the college's dean following a national search, effective July 1, according to WIU Provost and Academic Vice President Jack Thomas.

Martinelli-Fernandez has served as interim dean of the WIU College of Arts and Sciences since July 2009. She is also serving concurrently as associate dean, a position she has held since 2005. She is also a professor of philosophy, and has served as a faculty member in the philosophy and religious studies department since 1993.

Join the WIU Alumni Association in the Quad Cities on Tuesday, May 18 for the WIU vs. Iowa Pregame Social and Baseball Game and WIU-QC Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. Our social at Modern Woodmen Park begins at 6:00 p.m. and the Leathernecks' game against the Hawkeyes starts at 6:30 p.m.
