WIU Announces $60 Million Campaign

WIU logoThe public phase of the $60 million campaign, Set the Standard: Higher Values in Higher Education, for Western Illinois University was announced to donors, alumni and invited guests at an Oct. 29 WIU Foundation event.

"When we announced our goal of $60 million more than four years ago, the campaign consultants thought our goal was lofty, and suggested we set the target at $30 million," noted WIU President Al Goldfarb. "Since launching the pre-public phase of this campaign in 2006, I am pleased to announce that we have surpassed that $30 million mark.

Garry Johnson Announces Retirement

Garry Johnson photoW. Garry Johnson, who has served as vice president of student services at Western Illinois University since 1997, will retire June 30, 2011, after 31 years of service. A reception will be announced at a later date.

Johnson, who was named vice president of student services at Western in May 1998, also serves as an associate professor of counselor education and college student personnel. Johnson served as the University’s interim vice president for student services from 1997 to 1998, and prior to this appointment, he served as associate vice president for student services from January 1997 to September 1997, and as assistant vice president for student services-student life from 1983 to 1996. He was Western’s director of residence life from 1980 to 1983. Prior to joining the student services division at WIU, Johnson was the assistant director of housing and residence hall director at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

WIU Named Best for Vets College

Best for Vets logoWestern Illinois University has been selected as a "Best for Vets College" by Military Times EDGE magazine. Western, ranked 25th, is one of only two Illinois public institutions in the top 25, and is one of only three Illinois public universities, out of 101 colleges and universities, selected for the recognition.

According to the Military Times, more than 4,000 colleges and universities were invited to respond to a survey detailing programs, policies and resources for veterans. Selection criteria included financial assistance; academic flexibility; campus culture; and support services.

Join Us in Arlington Heights, Freeport and Rockford

Your WIU Alumni Association is headed to Arlington Heights, Freeport and Rockford this month for three great events! On Saturday, November 6, we will be at Peggy Kinnanes Irish Restaurant & Pub for scrumptious appetizers and a cash bar beginning at 5:00 p.m. Then it is on to the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre for the performance of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at 7:00 p.m. We will visit Freeport on Wednesday, November 10 and our social at the Fieldstone Inn begins at 6:00 p.m. Finally, on Thursday, November 11, join us at Franchesco's in Rockford for an evening of food and fun beginning at 6:00 p.m.
