Pre-Law Symposium | Undergraduate Research Day | Spring 2011 Scholarship Award Recipients | Spring 2011 Honors Convocation | Spring & Summer 2011 Honors Scholars

Summer is a good time to reflect on the events of spring semester—a very active time for the Centennial Honors College. This was an exciting time in the quality of its events and the achievements of its students.

Pre-Law Symposium

On February 21—Presidents’ Day—the college sponsored the annual Pre-Law Symposium for the tenth year. This tenth annual campus event, for students interested in the study of law, is made possible through the generous support of the McDonough County Bar Association, the WIU Foundation, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English, the Department of History, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Department of Political Science.

This year, the keynote speaker was WIU Distinguished Alumnus Marty Green, vice president, government relations of the Illinois CPA Society.  He was joined by panelists Akami Marik, director for admissions and financial aid; alumnus Kateah McMasters, 2L; alumnus Bradly Rigdon, 2L; and James Ruppert, 1L, all of Southern Illinois University Law School, Carbondale. This event on February 21 welcomed 60 guests, the largest audience ever.

Undergraduate Research Day

This premier celebration of scholarship is the third named in honor of Thomas E. Helm and the ninth in its history. 301 student presenters, representing all four colleges and 32 disciplines, made two musical, 32 podium, and 187 poster presentations (221 total) on April 20.

Distinguished Alumna Speaker Katie Reiss addressed 30 students and faculty on the importance of undergraduate research in her development as she completes her master’s thesis.

Cash prizes, initiated by Provost Jack Thomas, for the best three poster and best three podium presentations were awarded for the third year with support from the four college and library deans.
