Student Alumni Assn. Honors Memory, Contributions of Fellow SAA Member

MACOMB, IL -- Students in Western Illinois University's Student Alumni Association (SAA) are keeping the memory and contributions of their former fellow student and SAA member Kerstin Taylor alive with a special tribute. In Fall 2010, the SAA voted to rename SAA's Annual Scholarship Award to the Kerstin S. Taylor Student Alumni Association Scholarship in memory of Taylor (Moline, IL), a former vice president of the organization, who passed away last summer.
According to Amanda Shoemaker, associate director of Alumni Programs at WIU, by renaming the annual scholarship awards, SAA members chose to honor Taylor and to celebrate her life and her many contributions to SAA and to Western Illinois University.
"Kerstin was a very active member of the Student Alumni Association since she joined in Fall 2009. In her role as vice president, she led the organization in such a positive manner. Kerstin enjoyed meeting WIU alumni, worked hard to make every SAA member feel included in every activity and always had a smile on her face," Shoemaker said.
The Kerstin S. Taylor Student Alumni Association Scholarship awards this year are in the amount of $250 each and were awarded to the following WIU students:
- Jordan Spaciel (Waterford, WI), sophomore, music education
- Kailyn Strieker (Quincy, IL), junior, marketing
This year, noted Shoemaker, the scholarship award amounts increased from $200 each to $250 each.
"When the SAA renamed the scholarship in the fall, we announced that donations to this scholarship fund during the 2010-11 academic year (in Kerstin's memory) would be added to the usual award amount of $200," she explained.
Shoemaker noted Spaciel and Strieker were each awarded the scholarship based on their commitment to promoting and supporting Western Illinois University as current students and their plans to serve as active alumni upon graduation.
