Shane Davis Named Assistant Baseball Coach

Shane Davis has been named assistant coach for the Fighting Leatherneck baseball program. He comes to Western Illinois after two seasons as an assistant coach at Cleveland State.

"I'm very pleased to be in Macomb," said Davis. "I've followed the program closely, and seen the improvemnents made in the past two seasons. I look to add to a program that is progressing toward great things in the Summit League."

Davis assisted with Cleveland State's recruiting efforts, focusing primarily in the Midwest. He also helped with summer ball placement and worked to arrange the team's travel plans and future scheduling.  Following Cleveland State's baseball program being dropped in May of this year, Davis served as an associate scout for the Texas Rangers prior to this appointment.

Women's Basketball Announces 2011-2012 Schedule

Sadie Webb photoWestern Illinois head women's basketball coach JD Gravina announced on Thursday the 2011-12 schedule. The first-year head coach will play 13 games at Waste Management Court inside Western Hall.

"We feel like we were able to put together a good, competitive schedule on a fairly short time frame, said Gravina. "Not only are we playing some marquee games with top-notch teams but we are also trying to focus on playing teams within the region. This makes sense from a budget standpoint and also will help fuel rivalries and give our fans opportunities to see how we compete with comparable programs.

Eric Johnson Reaches Milestone

Eric Johnson photoLast weekend, the longest tenured head coach at Western Illinois University reached a remarkable milestone; a milestone that topped all other coaches in the history of the Summit League. Fighting Leatherneck head coach Eric Johnson became the all-time winningest men's soccer coach in Summit League history.

Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine talked about the rarity of such an accomplishment.

"To have one of our coaches accomplish something like this is remarkable," said Van Alstine. "When discussing the all-time winningest coach in Summit League history, you're talking about a lot of head coaches. That really puts his 118 wins at Western into perspective, and these 118 wins are not just about longevity, as many of these victories have resulted in conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been, and continue to be, extremely privileged to have Dr. Johnson at the helm of our men's soccer program. He is a great ambassador for our department and our University."
