Technology Projects

The Technology Strategic Plan complements the campus' overall Higher Values in Higher Education strategic plan by focusing on the specific needs of technology. This effort will ensure that Western Illinois University's technology infrastructure and user support not only meet current needs, but are also at the forefront of developing technologies. Western Illinois University is committed to providing state-of-the-art technologies, infrastructure, support, and security.

Projects - January 23, 2003 Update

  • Emergency backup generator
    • An emergency backup generator is being installed to support the University Data Center in Morgan Hall. Final installation schedule in December 2007 was delayed and will be completed Spring 2008.
  • Fiber loop and wireless infrastructure
    • The fiber loop serving the entire Macomb campus will be completed November 2007.
    • Login security access will be required in 2008, with guest wireless access limited to the Internet.
  • Wireless access
    • Wireless accessibility to all academic buildings and the common areas of the residence halls was completed Summer 2007.
      • In addition, all of Grote and Olson Halls have wireless access
    • Outdoor wireless access will be extended to Hanson Field in 2008, as well as to the area between the stadium and the Malpass Library.
  • Classroom Technology
    • 30 classrooms have been identified for teaching technology enhancements.
    • New electronic classrooms will be constructed in Horrabin 59 and Garwood 24.
  • Faculty Computing Technology
    • Resources have been committed to establishing a maximum 4-year replacement rotation for faculty/staff computers. More than 200 outdated computers have been purchased through university funds for faculty replacements Spring 2008, with additional college-level funding committed to continuing this technology enhancement program.
  • Two-way audio-video equipment for connections between the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses
    • During Summer 2006, Western Illinois University upgraded one-half of the two-way audio-video equipment for connections between the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses.
    • The remaining equipment was ordered and installed Summer 2007
