MSG Jack C. Harlan Jr. is from Abingdon, Illinois. He entered the
Illinois Army National Guard in August of 1993 and attended Basic Combat
Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and AIT at Fort Bliss, Texas;
he was awarded MOS 16S-Manpads Crew Member. MSG Harlan joined the
active Army in July of 1997 and attended AIT at Fort Huachuca, Arizona;
he was awarded MOS 96R-Ground Surveillance Operator.
MSG Harlan’s past assignments include Team Leader B/313th Military
Intelligence Battalion (ABN), 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North
Carolina; Executive Administrative Assistant to the 82nd Airborne
Division Command Sergeant Major, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg,
North Carolina; Squad Leader C/102d Military Intelligence Battalion, 2nd
Infantry Division, Korea; Platoon Sergeant C/102d Military Intelligence
Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Korea; Drill Sergeant, 1st Armor
Training Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Senior Drill Sergeant, 1st Armor
Training Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Senior Enlisted Intelligence
Advisor, 0210 Military Transition Team, Iraq; Chief Intelligence
Sergeant/ G2 Sergeant Major, Army Sustainment Command, Rock Island
Arsenal, Illinois. Most recently he served as the Command Sergeant
Major for Task Force ODIN-A at Fort Hood, Texas.
He served tours with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North
Carolina; the 102d Military Intelligence Battalion, 2nd Infantry
Division Korea; 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Iraq;
1st Armor Training Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky; and 4th Brigade Combat
Team, 1st Infantry Division, Iraq. His current assignment is the First
Sergeant of Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment (Task
Force ODIN-A), Afghanistan.
MSG Harlan’s awards include the Bronze Star (2 OLC), Meritorious
Service Medal (2 OLC), Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, Army
Commendation Medal (5 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Army Good
Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award),
Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1 Campaign Service Star), Iraq Campaign
Medal (3 Campaign Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary
Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service
Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3rd
Award), Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Military Outstanding
Volunteer Medal, ISAF NATO Medal, Valorous Unit Award, the Combat Action
Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Drill
Sergeant Badge.
MSG Harlan is a Graduate of the Warrior Leaders Course, the Advanced
Leaders Course, the Seniors Leaders Course, Airborne School, Air Assault
School, the Jumpmaster Course, Drill Sergeant Course, Emergency Medical
Technician Basic Program, Military Transition Team Training, Advanced
Military Transition Team Training, Modern Army Combatives Course level
one and two, and the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers Course. He
has an Associates of Science Degree in Intelligence Operations from
Cochise College.
MSG Harlan is married to the former Frances L. Hitz of Avon, Illinois.
They have two children: Noah Chase and Colton Nathanial. His family
currently resides in Knoxville, Illinois.
