Graduate Council Minutes - September 13, 2021

I. STUDENT APPEALS

A. Request for a late withdrawal

1. Political Science

Student and Dr. Baldi were in attendance. Student explained that she began the program but significant personal issues from her youth. Student sought medical treatment but was unable to complete her internship. Dr. Baldi added that the department fully supports that student and doesn’t think there are long term issues with completing the program. Dr. Hyde asked about an incomplete and finishing later versus withdrawing. Student responded that she currently has a full course load and needs to remain in compliance with visa requirements.

Motion: To approve the request. (Hammersley/Keefe)

B. Request to hold an assistantship with less than a 3.0 graduate GPA

1. Computer Science

Student explained that he had issues with technology during the summer session. His computer crashed before the first assignment was due and continued to have issues while using the University computers. Eventually he was able to get a new computer but could not bring up his grades at that point.

Motion: To approve the request. (Hammersley/Anderson)

C. Request to hold an assistantship as a probationary student

1. Engineering Technology

Student and Dr. Hunter were in attendance. Student said that she didn’t feel like her GPA translated to the U.S. grading system well which led her to be probationary status. She hopes to be a leader in the field and an assistantship would give her an advantage. Dr. Hunter added that at least four faculty members in the program are really hoping to work with her based on her skill set and experience.

Motion: To approve the request. (Keefe/Blackinton)

II. ANNOUNCEMENTS

A. Academic integrity incident reports filed in the School of Graduate Studies, May – August 2021 (7)

B. Graduate Committee Chair fall semester meeting – September 29, 2021

Ms. Schulz notified Council members that a meeting for all graduate committee chairs was scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29 via Zoom. Council members would receive the meeting invitation as well. Topics for the meeting include strategic planning, recruitment, enrollment, international and immigration updates as well as other topics submitted by the graduate committee chairs.

C. Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Fund

Ms. Schulz requested a sub-committee of one member from each college be formed to review the fall applications for the Graduate Student Research and Professional Development award recipients. Graduate Council members will serve on the committees as follows:

Fall 2021 semester: Dr. Ghimire, Dr. Hammersley, Mr. House, and Dr. Hyde
Spring 2022 semester: Dr. Anderson, Ms. Blackinton, Dr. Hemphill, and Dr. Keefe

A date in late October will be established for the fall selection meeting that will take place via Zoom. Ms. Schulz will provide copies of the applications and evaluation forms.


III. GRADUATE CURRICULUM

A. Business Administration

1. Request for a 400-G level course

a. SCM 451, Supply Chain Negotiation, 3 s.h.

Dr. Lynne and Ms. Zimmerman were in attendance. Ms. Blackinton asked if there was a sample grading scale available. Ms. Zimmerman responded with information on the exercises that graduate students are required to complete that are a harder model than those for undergraduates. She explained that preparation is the main focus for negotiations and grad students would be responsible for additional readings plus leading discussion for the entire class. The exam format for grad students would be essay compared to the undergrad format of multiple choice and short answer. Discussion held regarding the approval process within each college for G courses. Dr. Hyde asked about the skill levels and the justification listed. Ms. Zimmerman added that there are currently no other negotiation courses available for MBA students or those in the Supply Chain Management PBC.
