In honor of Banned Books Week, the Western Illinois University Libraries will host its 7th annual "Banned and Determined" event on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at noon, in Room 180 of the Leslie F. Malpass Library.

Comics and graphic novels are the theme for this year’s Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of challenged literature sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). Titles such as Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, and Jeff Smith’s Bone series have come under fire in many schools and libraries: “Banned and Determined" will feature Marjorie Allison and Rebekah Buchanan, English & Journalism, speaking about the importance of graphic novels and their place in the curriculum.

“Western Illinois University Libraries’ faculty and staff encourage all readers to join with the ALA in celebrating the freedom to read, not only during Banned Books Week— September 21 through 27—but at all times,” Bowers Sharpe said. “Banned and Determined” is free and open to the public.
